How does Keto Beta Hydroxybutyrate work?
The body produces three types of ketone bodies that are used in the absence of glucose. These substances include ethyl acetate, acetone and Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Among the three substances, Keto BHB is the most abundant and the most commonly used to alternative glucose for fuel source, because it is able to cross obstacles that other molecules cannot cross. The main role of BHB is to provide energy for the brain and body, and helps mental and physical performance.
It is the most abundant of the three ketone bodies created by the liver, accounting 78% of the total ketones in the blood. The compound has been found to act as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor. Through inhibition of the HDAC class I isoenzymes HDAC2 and HDAC3, It has been found to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BNDF) levels and TrkB signaling in the hippocampus. Moreover, it has been determined that it mediates the effects of exercise on BDNF levels in the hippocampus. These findings may have clinical relevance in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment.
In epilepsy patients on the ketogenic diet, blood β-hydroxybutyrate levels correlate best with a degree of seizure control. The threshold for optimal anticonvulsant effect appears to be approximately 4 mmol/L.
